The Art of Screen Printing

The Art of Screen Printing

It all began with Andy Warhol and his famous piece, Marilyn Diptych.

Just kidding, silk screen printing has been around since approximately 1000 AD China. Because silk was the best natural material to use, it didn't catch on in the West until silk became readily available many centuries later.

Back to Warhol and Marilyn Monroe. What the Marilyn Diptych really did was to bring screen printing into the fine art world. Artists were more free to use this medium to create their work, and screen printers were finally starting to be respected as artists.

This enabled more people than ever before to express themselves through screen printing. Remember the Obama "Hope" image that captivated the world? Shepard Fairey screen printed the first posters and sold them on the street. It was and still is art made for all of us. And available to all of us.

It's hard to imagine modern art without screen printing. It allows artists like Fairey and Hebru Brantley to bring pop art to the street and street art to the galleries of the world.

It's also relatively simple to start printing your own designs at home. There are plenty of tutorials online to show you how, and interviews with artists to get you inspired. Ancient and modern, screen printed art is here to stay.

Jack White is the Man

Jack White is the Man

This just in: Jack White is going back on tour! It's been almost four years since the tour for Lazaretto, so we're pretty excited about this. Mark your calendars because tickets go live to the public on 1/26 at 10am (your local time, so maybe this is a good day to be in an earlier timezone).

In honor of this pretty exciting development, we wanted to take a minute to give Jack White some love on this blog.

Born in Detroit, White got his first big break at 19 for Goober & the Peas. When they broke up he and his then-wife Meg formed The White Stripes. Probably the greatest fake-sibling fronted band ever. Plus, they released their albums on white cassette's last year. Black ones coming soon!

Of course, The White Stripes was only the beginning. White went on to found two more bands (The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather) before going solo. Blunderbuss was released in 2012. Oh he also founded his own record label, Third Man Records in 2001. No wonder the man is already a legend.

Leaving aside his music for a moment, which is crazy we know, we love his posters. Whether you're looking at his bands or his solo work the art is incredible. Even on the busiest listing days, we can't help ourselves from pausing for a minute to admire the details. Check out our awesome collection of Jack White posters here. See for yourself just how great they are!

If this post has made you into a bigger Jack White fan (and we hope it has!) Third Man Records vault memberships. You could've bought those tour tickets early.

A final, fun tidbit for ya: While White lives in Nashville, TN where TMR lives. He also has a home in Kalamazoo, MI where Bell's Brewery lives.

One of our favorites: Pearl Jam

One of our favorites: Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam. I don't even know where to begin. They formed in Seattle back in 1990, making them one of the original (and longest lasting) bands of the Seattle grunge scene. Their debut album, Ten, was released in 1991. It really captured the collective emotions and experiences of many people at the time, and helped the grunge culture spread across the country. While commercial success didn't come right away for Ten, once it caught on it stayed on the charts for years.

With each album released, the members grew as artists and their sound continued to evolve. It's no doubt a big reason why they have stayed successful long after the end of grunge.

From almost the beginning, the members of Pearl Jam have been activists as well as musicians. They took on Ticketmaster in their early years, and supported many pro-choice causes. They eventually took a lot of heat in the early 2000's for Eddie Vedder's repeated criticisms of President George W. Bush. They remain politically conscious to this day; in 2016 they canceled a concert in Raleigh, NC after the state passed HB2 (the notorious "bathroom bill").

As you've no doubt guessed, we're big fans of Pearl Jam here at Sold Out Posters. Our Pearl Jam poster collection is quite extensive as a res
